                   Virginia Union University
                            Internet Access

In November (2000), Virginia Union University launched a new wireless broadband network that gives students instant access to the Internet virtually anywhere on campus. Approximately 2,000 users can now access the new information network from classrooms, dormitories and open spaces throughout the 100-acre campus.

Seven new Morehouse College students were named Gates
Millennium Scholars, bringing the college's total to 17 students
who have received the award since it was created in 1999. The Gates Millennium Scholars awards, which are administered
through the United Negro College Fund, will enable 20,000 young Americans to attend undergraduate and graduate institutions
of their choice.

                    Norfolk State University's
                   Reclamation 2000 Project
Come Back to NSU and Complete Your Degree

If you are a student who attended Norfolk State U. and didn't complete your degree, you may be able to return and complete your mission. After 20 years, Virginia Beach native Ron Cannon has become the first student to graduate after entering the school's "pilot project." The program is limited to former full-time Norfolk State students who are 24 years of age or older and have not been enrolled at the university during the last five years.  It's now all Web-Enhanced and Web-Based Instruction.  You must develop a Plan of Action with a counselor.  For more info contact: William Young at 757-368-4156 or email at wyoung@nsu.edu. Or go to http://www.nsu.edu/Academics/vbhec/reclamation.htm.

                           Howard University
                             Wealthiest HBCU

Howard University (which annually receives about $200 million
in operating funds directly from Congress) is the wealthiest HBCU, with an endowment of $152 million. But that still places it 128th among U.S. colleges (Harvard, by contrast, has more than $7 billion in the bank), and only four HBCUs were among the top 460 colleges recently ranked by wealth.

                 Tennessee State University
Makes list of "Most Wired" Universities

Tennessee State University has made the Yahoo! list of the nation's 100 Most Wired Universities 2000, an annual ranking of  higher educational institutions which offer students the most comprehensive computer technologies. The university debuted at No. 55. "TSU's strong placement on the list of America's Most Wired Universities indicates our commitment to being a 21st century institution," said TSU president James A. Hefner.

                       Morgan State University
                        Electing the Class of 2002

This story from the Morgan State Spokesman still appears at the school's website.  On Thursday, September 24, 1998, the candidates for freshman class office had the opportunity to present themselves to the freshman body. Tiffany Hansberry, the last candidate to speak, rubbed many people the wrong way with her less than thoughtful slogan, "Vote for the light-skinned girl from Philly." Tiffany did her best to explain that her slogan was a means
to get recognized by those who didn't know her name. She said, "That's how everyone knows me." Hansberry won the Office of Ms. Freshman by a landslide.

                    Central State University
                         The Olympic Games

In a recent poll conducted on campus, a select few students and faculty were asked to choose the top five influential events
concerning campus matters last year.  The school's "Olympic
Excellence," was the #1 choice. Nine former or current CSU
athletes representing six countries competed in the Games in
Sydney. Jamaican Deon Hemmings brought home the Silver
Medal in the 400 meter hurdles to go with the Gold she won
in the games four years earlier.
